Description
The Artist's Sister, Emilie Asleep- after Adolph Von Menzel
A German draughtsman and lithographer, who as a proto-Impressionist in the mid 1840s, produced a brief period of free brushstroke works, Adolph Von Menzel, is known for his popular realist paintings of history. Highly esteemed, if not socially estranged perhaps due to dwarfism, Von Menzel's funeral was planned by the Kaiser himself, who led the procession walking directly behind the artist's horse drawn cadence.
In studying this work, I naturally built the painting in sections, as my eye and hand aligned to produce the work you see.
It was a very satisfying study that provided valuable experiential knowledge, and insights in paint application and image looking/building.
